Wellie Ang

A 94-year-old tailor specialising in Indonesian batik shirts, Wellie opened his store, Wellie's Batik Fashion in 1978. It is now a second-generation business, as his youngest son Erick co-runs the establishment.

It's been inspiring for us to see how far Wellie has come. In the 1970s, he taught himself how to sew and sold ready-made batik shirts at pasar malams (night markets) in Katong and Clementi. He eventually invested his life savings into a brick-and-mortar store, and did not earn any income for the first few months. Today, the store still stands tall — a bastion of craftsmanship in Singapore.
